We are building a house.

Today we hiked over to where we are going to build a house for a Widow and drew up some plans to start building! This Widow has had a very hard life but keeps her trust in God! Now with God’s provision, we get to build a house for her and her two boys! We are going to be starting the construction in June.

I have fond where I belong!

So much has been going on down here in the last few months. From traveling to and from the mountaivillages to helping the students study for their mid-term exams. Lately, we have been spending a lot of time in the dorm in Zacapa with all the students. There is such a strong battle for the souls of these kidsSo many of them come from backgrounds of witchcraft and strong catholic roots. Every morning we get up and pray for the kids that their hearts would be softened and that they would be set free from the bondage that oppresses them. Our hope for the dorm is that the kids would receive more than just a good education but that their hearts would be touched by God. It has been such a privilege to watch the kids open up and become more curious about God. The other day I got to share my testimony with all the kids. A lot of the kids struggle with the same things I did: very low self-esteem, not feeling like they belong and feeling less than everyone else. All of these thingsare lies from the devil to try and keep us from God and becoming all that God planned us to be.

It is so cool to see the things that God has brought me through in my life applying to the teens. The things that once overtook me with fear and kept me in the background have now become my platform with these teens. My prayer for these teens is that they would see that God loves them and that he has a plan for their livesI also pray they would find confidence in God and would be free from the chains and lies that bind them.

Through the last few weeks, I have been praying for God’s heart for my life. Specifically, I have been praying for clarity in His vision for my life and what He wants to see happen in the lives of the people He has called me to serve.  I find it a pleasure and honor to be able to serve the people of Guatemala. I know this is where God has called me to stay and be His light in the darkness of Guatemala. However, right now I only have enough support raised to stay until the end of April. I need $1,500 a month to cover my living costsThis means, I need 15 people to pledge a $100 a month, or 25 people to pledge $50 a month but everything helps. I am returning to the states in October and staying through Christmas. My hope while there is to network personally with people and raise the support I need to stay here permanentlyUntil then, I need $8,000 to be able to stay until October. This means $1,500 by mid-April and $6,500 by June. If you would like to donate, please go to www.fiaministries.com/give/. In the drop down menu for donation, choose my name (Amanda Culver). If you have any questions please email me at amandaculver911@gmail.com. All donations are tax deductible.

I ask that you would pray first about supporting me and ask God what your part could be in the work he is doing here in Guatemala. Above all pleas keep the teens in are dorm in your prayers that God would become real to them and that they would desire a personal relationship with Him.

The Dream for Zacapa

I announced a few weeks ago that I am a full time missionary in Guatemala and have officially moved to Guatemala!! I have fallen in love with the people and have grown so many relationships with the people here that I could not image living anywhere else. I feel that Guatemala is where God has my heart and that this is where I belong. I am very excited to be serving here and working with Faith in Action! As I said in my last post I am going to be developing a Children’s Ministry to more focus on the kids and their special needs. I only touched on my heart for this ministry in my last post but I want to share more of what I have on my heart and my vision for starting a children’s ministry in Guatemala. I am going to do a series of blogs casting my vision and heart for each individual place we work.

Zacapa: FIA has a dorm that they house teens from the mountains and put them through high school and college. They pay for all the needs for each teen and help them get through school. The hope of the program is to help the kids get an education so that they can get better jobs and help break the poverty cycle that the mountain people have lived in for 1000 years. As well as helping them get in education, we want to be there for the teens to be their friends and an open ear when they need to talk. I have developed many relationships with the kids in the dorm and love them all dearly. As the kids are with us in the dorms are heart is that they would learn about God and who he is. A lot of students come from vary strong Catholic families and families that practices witch craft. (If you want to know more about the dorm in Zacapa visit fiaministries.com/what-we-do/construction-programs/student-dormitories/)

My heart for Zacapa is to see the teens in the dorm to except Christ. To find Him to be the loving caring merciful gracious God he is; that they would grow in an understanding of Christ and fall in love with Him. Many of the teens in the dorm have become my good friends; some of the older students are the same age as me. And my heart brakes for the ones that don’t yet know God and are weighted down with religious practices and full of superstitions. The ministry opportunity in the dorm will be doing a weekly bible study with the teens. Most importantly, just being there for them when they need help, to be an open ear when they need to talk and just loving on them

Near the dorm in Zacapa there is a city dump. Many families live in and around the dump, they pick through the trash to find things to recycle (plastic, tin cans…) or things that are worth money. The people in the dump are the lowest class and the rejects of society. As the parents work in the dump the children play and help work in the dump. Sometimes we take the teams that come from the states to the dump and hand out food and play soccer with the kids. Every time I go I get a growing burden to do more there. I have been praying to ask God what he wants to do with the kids in the dump and what form of ministry would be best for them. Some ideas are to do monthly out reaches such as doing movie nights, VBS, and just hanging out with the kids playing soccer and teaching them about the love of God. I am still praying about if this is a place God wants me to work in or not. I ask that you would pray about this opportunity as well.
None of what God is doing through me down here would be possible unless it was for all the prayer support I receive. Please keep Zacapa and all the teens in the dorm in your prayers and that God would use me in their lives to be example of a life surrendered to Christ. As I have become a full time missionary in Guatemala I also need monthly support, if you are interested in partnering with what God is doing in Guatemala and would like to support me go to www.fiaministries.com/give/ in the drop down menu where it asks where you want your money to go, select my name Amanda Culver. God has a dream for your life.

Made it through my first week of language school! The first few days seemed like such a struggle for me to make it to school. I felt like I had to drag myself out of bed, get dressed and walk to school. I felt such a battle going on inside of me. The only thingI knew to do, was to run was to God, sit at His feet and ask Him to help me fight the battle in front me. Going to language school is taking the next step in making Guatemala my new home and being able to speak in Spanish. It is taking the next step to being able to further the name of God in Guatemala. As the battle raged inside of me, the words once again filled my head that it would just be easier to give up now to go home. But I know Guatemala is where I am called and the words going through my head where just lies form the enemyGod will help me throughand provide for me. All I have to do is just let go; stop trying to control my own life and let God take control.

I was reading in Genesis today about how God provided the sacrifice for Abraham. God asked Abraham to sacrifice His son. Isaac was the promised heir of Abraham. He was the fulfilmentof the promise God made to Abraham to make Him the father of all nations; a promise that his offspring would be as many as the stars in the sky. But yet even with that promise, God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son. God was asking Abraham if he was willing to take the one thing God had given Him, the promise to be the father of all nations, and sacrifice it before him. Abraham surprisingly obeyed God. He took his son and the things need to make a sacrifice to God. And just as he was about to kill Isaac, God stopped Him and provide a bull for him to sacrifice instead.

Are we willing to give up what is most precious to us? Even the promises that God has given us? Are we willing to place it backin His hands to let go of and let God have control of our lives?Even when we don’t know what might happen in the end? Do we trust in God enough to let go and know what He has for us in the end is better than we could ever image? God desires to be our center, our lover, the one that fulfills our empty hearts. He wants to guide you and direct you in this life. He has a dream for all of our lives and He wants to walk with us and fulfill that dream in us. If only we would let go of controlling our lives and let God take over.

I have found my new home!!

As many of you know I have been interning in Guatemala with Faith in Action for a year and a half. The time I have been here has really molded and shaped me in to who I have become. Being here has taught me life is not about me me me, and making a comfortable life for myself on this earth. Life is about God and making His name know to the lost and broken, no matter the cost. Living a life fully sold out to God and His purposes has brought me more joy and happiness than anything I have ever experienced. I have truly found my calling, my purpose in this world; it is to proclaim the name of Christ. We all have a different call on our lives but it is all for the same purpose, it just looks different in how God has us accomplish it. I have found my call…my place in building up the kingdom of God. I very excited to announce that I feel God has called me to stay in Guatemala to work alongside FIA (Faith In Action) to further the gospel of Christ and spread His love to the lost and broken people of Guatemala. A lot of prayer has gone in to this decision by me and the leadership of FIA. We all feel at peace with this and know that this is the plan God has for my life at this time.

I am very excited to be making Guatemala a more permanent place of ministry and working alongside FIA. One of my primary focuses is going to be starting a Children’s Ministry in the mountain villages and the villages alongside the tributaries of the Rio Dulce River. Where ever we go into any of the villages we are always surrounded by children. Through the year of being here my heart has felt a burden to do more for the kids; to teach them more about God, who He is, and His love for them. The FIA ministry leaders feel the same way and want to further the work they are doing with the children. My heart for doing this is to teach the next generation who Jesus is, what it means to live a life for Him, and build up the army of God by preparing His children. The heart of FIA is so clear and that is to train up the people in the villages to help themselves and be self-sufficient, not depending on the missionary’s for everything they need. So just like the example FIA is, my heart is to teach the women in the villages how to teach the children so that there can be a consistent program for all the children and they won’t be dependent on me and the rest of FIA to be there. My prayer is that the women in the church would take ownership of it and raise up the children of their village to know God.

I will be attending a language school here in Guatemala for one mouth in January. I have learned a lot of Spanish in the last year and a half, however, I am still lacking in my grammar and need to learn more so that there won’t be anything keeping me from all that God wants to do through me here in Guatemala.

To make this possible I need the support of prayer and finances. I could never do this by myself and I was never meant to, as the body of Christ we are never meant to do anything on our own, but to work together as a body. We all have our different place in the work of God. Some are meant to send and others are meant to go. But nothing would happen if any part of the body tried to do it all. One of the most imported things I need is prayer; everything first happens in prayer and is one of the most important aspects of any ministry. Our purpose in doing anything we do is to win souls for Christ and to spread His name; that would never happen unless we pray and seek out the heart of God and walk where he leads.

I also need financial support. The work that I get to be a part of with FIA is not a one man act; the ones that send are just in evolved with what God is doing in Guatemala as the ones that are in Guatemala doing the work. The gospel would never be furthered in the remote places of Guatemala unless there are people to go and other people to send. I have a monthly goal of raising $2,500 per month. This covers room, board, and traveling to and from all our different home bases. It will also cover my phone bill, internet, health insurance, personal costs and anything that I might need, as well as an emergency fund. It will help cover part of the ministry materials needed to work with the children as well as help to pay for traveling to and from the US. My goal is to come back to the US once a year.
I ask that you would pray about supporting me and if you feel called to support the work in Guatemala I need people to support me on a monthly basis. If you would like to support me monthly or give a one-time gift please go to www.fiaministries.com, go to the donate page and click the drop down menu to choose where your money goes, then select Amanda Culver. If you would like to give by check please make it out to Faith in Action, put Amanda Culver in the memo line, and send it to 4990 Dovetail Lane Colorado Springs CO 80916.

Thank you so much for all the support and prayers you have given me through the time I have been here. God is really moving through the people in Guatemala and I am very exited to be a part of what He is doing here.

With Love,

Amanda Culver

I have been back in Guatemala for almost two months now. It’s been a crazy two months already, but every step has had its purpose and reason. Every lesson, good and bad, has made me stronger. Every hard time has shown me that no matter how hard it gets, there is always a peace in the storm and a reason for the battle I am fighting.
As children of God we are called to live outside of ourselves, to live for a purpose bigger than ourselves. We are called to live for others, to live as a mirror reflecting Christ and all He has done. We are called to live a life that looks different, to not be like the rest of the world. Someone read me a Jim Elliot quote today that said “Father, make of me a crisis man. Bring those I contact to decision. Let me not be a milepost on a single road; make me a fork, that men must turn one way or another on facing Christ in me”.  We should be so different that when people see us they would stop and question what is in us. Because if we lived in the wholeness of all Christ is, we would live lives of freedom and of completion. We would no longer question what we are a part of and our life callings would be clear. We are all called to battle at the front lines; to fight for the ones who don’t know Christ, the ones who are still bound by the world.
My prayer lately has been that God would bring out the areas in my heart that are not yet given over completely, the things in my life that are still rooted in the world. Something I was journaling the other day was that I no longer want to look like the world; I don’t want to base who I am off of the scales of the world or on the lives of people around me. I don’t want to find satisfaction in anyone or anything but my Creator. I am sick and tired of the emotional roller coaster that this world takes us on, saying that we are not fit for this or that. That we don’t have enough skill or education to do something. That we are too young for God to use us yet. Whatever it is, we seem to have an excuse or reason that keeps us from expressing all that God is. The God that is in the Bible took the least of them and made them His, the weak and made them strong, the misfits and used them to change the world. All of the disciples of God were under the age of 21 and were the unlearned, underdogs of society. But yet He chose them, built them up in Him, and made them world changers. There is no obstacle too big for God to overcome. If we would just trust in God and give ourselves over to Him, we would find a reason to live and a fulfillment that will last a lifetime.
